Volume Manager Database

The following attributes are maintained for each volume:

Volser - The volume serial number.
Field type: 6 alpha-numeric characters.
Volume type - medium and capacity.
Field type: numeric.
Pool group - for tracking purchase batches and/or allocation pools.
Field type: numeric.
Source Repository - location of storage, e.g. vault, robot.
Field type: numeric.
Destination Repository - destination if volume is in transit.
Field type: numeric.
Owner (Unix user, group).
Field type: numeric.
Access Rights - read/write access permissions for the user, group and others. Permissions are saved and interpreted as in System V Unix.
Field type: numeric.
Use: IDLE, MOUNT, MOVE - indicates last known state.
Field type: single character.
Status: VIRGIN, SCRATCH, ALLOC, RECYCLE, TRASH.

- VIRGIN - has no internal label
- SCRATCH - labelled on medium, available to allocate/write
- ALLOC - allocated to user
- RECYCLE - released by owner for recertification
- RECYCLE_BAD - released by owner for recertification, owner thought there was a flaw
- TRASH - to be discarded
Creation time - when the volume was allocated.
Field type: Unix date in hexadecimal.
Last modification time - when the volume was last mounted with write access.
Field type: Unix date in hexadecimal.
Last access - when the volume was last mounted.
Field type: Unix date in hexadecimal.
Internal label - the Volume Identifier field of the internal ANSI-standard label at the beginning of the volume (if it exists). See ANSI:X3.27.
Note: the external label specifies the unique volser for the system. The ANSI label does not have to agree with the volume's external label. Furthermore, ANSI labels do not have to be unique among volumes stored in the database. However, ANSI labels must be unique among all the volumes owned by any UID.
